This is the basic style where all yoga begins. In this class, principles of alignment are combined with your controlled breath to increase strength, flexibility, awareness, and joy. By slowly moving through a flowing set of postures, you will increase your stamina as you go deeper into each pose. One of the best rewards achieved from this class is that you will welcome a more relaxed and open state of mind as you align your body, mind, and spirit. Each student’s abilities and challenges will be honored by offering variations to support all ability levels.
This session is perfect for those who are new to yoga or who prefer a less strenuous practice.
Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement,” and Vinyasa yoga focuses on moving the body through the power of inhaling and exhaling. Movements are smooth and dance-like and require comfortable clothing to flow from one pose to another. Expect to sweat a little during practice; wear something breathable and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. Sweating expels toxins and re-energizes the body while synchronized breathing helps to relax the mind and promote the flow of energy through the body. Vinyasa flow is great for beginners as well as those more advanced in their practice.
Yin yoga directs stimulation to the connective tissues of the body: the ligaments, bones, and joints that can be neglected in more dynamic and muscular asanas. It perfectly complements the “yang” styles of yoga with a slower, more sustained practice.
Restorative yoga is a more supported practice aimed at relieving stress and restoring the mind-body-spirit balance that is so easily skewed by everyday worries. Props are used to reduce physical stress and create a more relaxing experience. Restorative poses work to move the spine, reverse the effects of gravity, and alternately soothe and stimulate the organs. This yoga practice stabilizes the prana, or masculine energy, with the apana, the feminine energy, to return you to a more balanced state.
Chair yoga is an adaptive practice that allows everyone to experience the benefits of yoga regardless of age or fitness level. The chair takes the place of the traditional yoga mat so those who have difficulty getting to the floor (because of disability, weight challenges, inflexibility, or whatever reason) can still enjoy a full yoga practice.
Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009). This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.
Karma (selfless service) Yoga is a free class for people who have movement challenges. This is an inclusive class of gentle chair, restorative and relaxation yoga. It is open to all with difficulty in motion and balance, including but not limited to Parkinson’s Disease, Dystonia, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, balance disorders, spatial perception, etc. Caregivers who accompany students are encouraged to participate and learn about yoga and it’s benefits. This is an hour long class and is comprised of a 1/2 hour of chair yoga and another 1/2 hour of restorative yoga.
